St. Mary River Irrigation District

The St. Mary River Irrigation District aimed to create visually engaging signage for placement at each of their reservoirs throughout the region. The goal of the billboards was to answer frequently asked questions and help the public better understand SMRID’s operations and the important role reservoirs play in supporting agriculture, recreation, and regional sustainability.

Planning

Working from a set of reference documents, I identified the key information most relevant to the public. Each billboard would convey consistent core messages while including a diagram of the specific reservoir and unique facts to differentiate each location.

Signage Design

Once the content was approved, I brought my sketches into Illustrator, creating graphics that show the water movement through the irrigation system, reservoir fill cycles, and natural fluctuations in water levels. A key challenge was designing visuals that were both engaging for the public and informative, while also determining appropriate text sizes without the ability to test print. Overall, I am proud of the final result and honoured to have work displayed at the reservoirs that contrubutes to public understanding of SMRID’s operations.
